Â
Georgia State 15, Troy 3
Â
Troy (13-9, 0-1 Sun Belt) hit back-to-back home runs in the sixth inning. Jaycee Affeldt hit a two-run shot as a pinch hitter and Chelsea Eytel hit her first career home run, a solo shot to left field to account for the Trojans only runs of the game.
Â
Ashley Rainey (5-2) took the loss for the Trojans, as she gave up seven runs --one earned -- on six hits and struck out two in two innings of work. Sarah Thomas made her first appearance of the season, as she pitched 1.2 innings and gave up eight runs on seven hits and struck out two. Meg Willis also made her first pitching appearance of the season as she got the final out for Troy in the fourth inning.
Â
Georgia State (14-2, 1-0 Sun Belt) scored four runs in the first inning, two of them came on a double by Callie Alford. The next two runs on the inning came on a Megan Litumbe home run. The Panthers scored three more runs on a string of hits in the second inning to give them a 7-0 lead.
Â
The third inning only saw one Panther cross the plate on a sacrifice fly by Ashley Chirsty. The fourth inning got started on an Alford home run, which gave the Panthers a 9-0 advantage. Three straight two-out hits scored four more runs for Georgia State which gave them a 13-0 lead and an Alford double scored the final two runs for the Panthers.
Â
Taylor Thorpe (8-0) got the win for Georgia State as she pitched 4.1 innings and gave up three earned runs on five hits.
Â
Carli Kayler hit her fifth double of the year. It was the Trojans 34th double of the season, already tying their tally from a year ago.
Â
Georgia State 4, Troy 0
Â
Georgia State's Katie Worley (3-0) pitched seven innings of no-hit softball and struck out a career–high 14 batters and only walked three.
Â
Troy (13-10, 0-2 Sun Belt) threatened in the second and fifth innings, but could not get a runner to third base. Â Becca Hartley, who now has a 23 game reached base streak, reached on a lead off walk, followed by Khadija Neely, who reached base after getting hit by a pitch with one out, was all that would happen in the second inning as the inning would end with back-to-back strikeouts. The fifth saw Neely reach with a lead off walk, but Worley struck out the side to end the inning.
Â
Georgia State (15-2, 2-0 Sun Belt) scored the first run of the game in the second inning on a wild pitch. The Panthers scored three more runs in the third inning. One run came on a Lauren Coleman single, and the other two came on a Litumbe single to center field.
Â
Sara Mock (1-5) took the loss for Troy, as she pitched two innings and only allowed one earned run on two hits and struck out two. Affeldt made her 17th relief appearance of the season. She allowed three runs on seven hits to go along with four strikeouts in five innings of work.
Â
The series finale will be Sunday at 11 a.m. at the Bob Heck Softball Complex.
