Â
TROY, Ala. – Troy men's golf returns to postseason play for the first time since 2017 this weekend when the Trojans compete in the inaugural National Golf Invitational at the Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Course in Maricopa, Arizona. Teams are scheduled to play single rounds on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Â
Backed by Golfweek, the NGI features the top 15 teams in the country which didn't qualify for the NCAA Championship using a combination of Golfstat and Golfweek/Sagrin rankings. Troy finished in a tie for third place at the Sun Belt Championship, making match play for the first time since 2017.Â
Â
The winner of the NIG is granted a team exception into the 2023 Maui Jim Intercollegiate, which featured some of the nation's top teams last year, including No. 3 Arizona State, No.7 Florida State, No. 11 Georgia Tech, No. 12 Tennessee and No. 13 Auburn.
Â
Brantley Scott, who led the Trojans with a -0.63 score vs. par, will not be able to compete in the NGI due to NCAA rules concerning multiple postseason competitions. Scott finished play at the NCAA Auburn Regional on Wednesday. Multiple teams in the field at the NGI filed waivers with the NCAA to allow individuals who competed in an NCAA Regional to also compete in the NGI, but it was denied.
Â
Despite not having Scott in the lineup, second-year head coach Forrest Schultz still has a stacked group to hit the links this week led by senior Nicklas Borrmann, who finished the year with a 0.93 score vs. par and with 13 rounds under-par, just one behind Scott's team-leading tally.
Â
Borrmann tied for seventh at the Sun Belt Championship, one of three top 10 performances on the year as he posted a 72.56 stroke average in the spring, with all but three of his spring rounds within two strokes of par.
Â
Jake Springer is also in double-digits for under-par rounds with 11 over his 30 total rounds this season, including two in the 60s, while Jason Quinlan and Will McFadden have combined for 13 rounds in the red. Quinlan turned in the second-best spring on the team with a 72.17 average, while McFadden will be one of the most experienced players in the field with 138 career collegiate rounds played.
Â
George Burch moves into the lineup for the Trojans to replace Scott in his first action since February. He's played three of his 15 rounds this season under-par this season.
Â
The Field
Troy, Stetson, Arkansas State, Santa Clara, Wyoming, Washington State, Oral Roberts, Texas State, Penn State, Ball State, Valparaiso, Utah Valley and George Washington
