MARICOPA, Ariz. – Nicklas Borrmann fired a season-best 4-under 68 to lead Troy in Friday's opening round of the inaugural National Golf Invitational at the Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club. The Trojans shot 3-under as a team and are tied for fourth place.
Borrmann carded six birdies in his round, the fifth-most in the field, and shot 1-under on the par 3s, tied for first in the field of 65 golfers. He is tied for third place overall and just two shots behind individual leader, Tyler Severin from Wyoming.
The Troy senior made the turn at 2-under following three birdies and a bogey on the front nine and followed with the same card on the back nine for his team-leading 14th round under par this year and fourth in the 60s.
Troy is five shots off the pace as Wyoming shot 8-under as a team in the opening round, while Penn State is in second at 7-under and Washington State sits third at 5-under.
Playing for the first time since February, George Burch shot 1-under thanks to four birdies, including back-to-back ones on the 13th and 14th, which turned his card from the black to the red for the day. Burch, who is tied for 19th place, is in the lineup due to an NCAA rule about postseason play that has kept Brantley Scott on the sideline after he competed in the NCAA Regional earlier this week.
Will McFadden and Jake Springer are tied for 34th place at 1-over following Friday's round. McFadden carded birdies on the first and 14th holes, while Springer found the cup early four times throughout his opening round. Jason Quinlan dropped back-to-back birdies on the eighth and ninth to shoot 74 on the day; he is tied for 45th place.
Play continues Saturday with the second round. Troy will play alongside Texas State and Ball State, with the first threesome hitting the course at 8 a.m. (CT).
