TROY, Ala. – The Troy softball team toppled undefeated Omaha 2-0 and crushed Furman 12-4 to cap off the Trojan Invitational and a 14-game homestand. The Mavericks (11-1) entered the weekend as the D1 Softball Mid-Major No. 1 team and received votes in multiple national polls last Monday.
The Trojans (12-2) stopped a Mavericks offense that averaged 9.73 runs and just 3.55 strikeouts per game. From the circle, Abby Lovell (3-0) shut down Omaha with 13 strikeouts and allowed just two hits. Dailynn Motes provided all the fuel the offense needed with a laser of a two-run home run to right field in the sixth inning.
In the afternoon game, Makaley Boswell drove in a career high six runs, vaporizing a first-inning homer as part of a 3-for-4 game. As a team, Troy hit three home runs to take down the Paladins (1-13).
TROY 2, Omaha 0
In a game that started at 6:33 p.m. on Saturday, Troy took down D1 Softball Mid-Major No. 1 Omaha 2-0. Abby Lovell spun a shutout against what was the No. 6 scoring offense in the nation, racking up 13 strikeouts and scattering two hits.
Dailynn Motes put the Trojans on top in the bottom of the sixth with an opposite-field line drive homer to right. Also having a solid game from the dish was Makaley Boswell, who extended her hit streak to 12 games with a 2-for-3 performance.
In the contest, Lovell terrorized an Omaha team that was averaging just 3.55 strikeouts before facing the southpaw. Her 13 strikeouts were the most by a Troy freshman since Leanna Johnson struck out 16 against App State on Apr. 19, 2019.
Lovell shut down the Mavericks in the first two innings, striking out the side both frames. Aside from a Boswell double and a single off the bat of Kam Munson, the Trojans couldn't get much going either.
With two outs in the top of the third, the game entered a weather delay and resumed on Sunday morning. Lovell picked up right where she left off, finishing off a batter that already had two strikes when the game was delayed to earn her eighth strikeout.
A single from Boswell couldn't get the Trojans on the board in the bottom of the third. However, Lovell worked around a double and logged strikeout number nine in the fourth inning. With runners on the corners and two outs in the fifth, the freshman stepped up with her 11th strikeout of the game to keep it scoreless.
Following yet another scoreless frame and strikeout from Lovell, the Trojans' offense ignited in the sixth. Ella Cunningham dropped a single into right field to lead off the inning. Motes lined a home run to the opposite field to put Troy on top 2-0.
Lovell worked around traffic on the basepaths in the seventh inning to finish the game. She stranded two runners, cutting down her 13th batter of the game to end it.
TROY 12, Furman 4
Troy earned its 10th run-rule win on the season with a 12-4 win over Furman to end the tournament. Makaley Boswell logged a staggering six RBIs, and the Trojans clobbered three home runs to dash past the Paladins.
From the jump, Boswell was on fire at the plate. Her first-inning home run provided two of her career-high six RBIs in a 3-for-4 day. She became the first Trojan since Taylor McKinney against West Georgia last April to have six RBIs in a game.
Kalee Rochinski and Kam Munson also crushed home runs on a windy afternoon at the Troy Softball Complex, giving Munson three long balls in the past five games. It was the first time since Apr. 17, 2025, at Texas State the Trojans had three homers in a game.
Savannah Money worked a clean inning to start the game, and the Troy offense wasted no time getting on the board. After a bunt single from McKinnon Howard, Boswell annihilated a home run to left-center field to put Troy on top 2-0.
The Paladins quickly tied it up in the second, scoring on an RBI single and a fielder's choice. However, the Trojans didn't waste any time snatching the lead back. Rochinski's home run to center field made it 3-2. The Trojans poured on with an infield single from Howard and chaos on the basepaths scoring another run.
Following another second-inning run off a Boswell groundout, the Trojans went back to work after Emma Banks (2-1) left the bases loaded in the third. Just like last inning, Troy led it off with a homer. Munson skied one to left-center field to start the inning. The Trojans made it 9-2 with RBI singles from Howard and Boswell and scored again on a throwing error.
Both teams had a quiet fourth inning, but Furman cut the lead to 9-4 in the fifth with a two-run homer from Kristyn Embler. Troy battled right back, as walks from Mya Holt and Howard created trouble on the basepaths.
Boswell earned her fifth and sixth RBIs of the game with a double to bring them both home. The Trojans walked it off with a single from Dailynn Motes to bring Kiley Huffman around to score.
Quotable: Head Coach Eric Newell
"Go Trojans! I couldn't be more proud of this team and the effort they put in against a real quality team in Omaha. Abby in the circle is just special, there's something different about her. I couldn't be happier for Dailynn either, with the big two-run home run. It was a great day for our team, a great day for our girls and a great win for our program."
