LAFAYETTE, La. – Troy softball blanked No.17 Louisiana with an explosive 3-0 win to open the series in Lamson Park on Thursday evening.
Sarah Beth Brake had her best game in cardinal this season. The junior catcher went 2-for-3 from the dish with two RBIs.
It was a rubber match between the Troy (33-19,13-9) pitching staff and the Louisiana (38-16, 20-2) pitching staff neither budging until the fourth inning.
Troy broke the scoring drought first in the fourth frame of the game. Taylor McKinney and Libby Baker took to the bases by drawing a walk and singling to the outfield. A ground out advanced the runners when Cassidy Boltz reached on a fielder's choice, sending McKinney across the plate.
Troy loaded the bases when Audra Thompson got hit by a stray pitch to force Louisiana starter Sam Landry out of the game with Sarah Beth Brake on deck. Brake lined one down the left field line to keep the momentum going, scoring pinch runner Jillian Williams. Two quick outs ended the inning with Troy up 2-0.
The Ragin' Cajuns managed to shut down the Troy offense until the top of the seventh inning. Brake banked an insurance run with a solo home run, extending the Troy lead to 3-0. Baker ended the game in the circle. She gave up her only hit before a fielder's choice, a line out and a ground out, secured the Trojan victory.
Troy hurled a tandem of Kate Peters, Savannah Money and Libby Baker. The trio each gave up one hit in 2.1 innings pitched, with Money recording the only strikeout for the Troy pitching staff.
Thoughts from Eric Newell
"That was a fun game, a team game. It was a game where we had a strategy, stuck to that strategy and executed it. Kate Peters with 2.1 innings pitched, Savannah Money with 2.1 innings pitched, and Libby Baker with 2.1 innings pitched, who went 37, 37 and 34 pitched. We had a plan and stuck to it, and it worked out for us. I could not be happier for our kids."
