TROY, Ala. – Thanks to its victory in the Golfweek / AGT Intercollegiate last season, the Troy men's golf team earned an exemption into this weekend's Augusta/Haskins Award Invitational presented by Valspar at the Forest Hills Golf Club.
The field features five teams ranked inside the top 26 nationally, five players rank in the top 15 of the latest PGA Tour University Rankings and four players ranked in the top 15 of the latest Clippd Rankings.
The winner of the last two events has gone on to win the NCAA Championship, and the individual winner will be granted a PGA Tour exemption. Additionally, players and coaches from all the participating teams will attend the Monday practice round of the Masters.
Troy heads to Augusta, coming off mixed results this spring. The Trojans tied for second at the Daytona Beach Intercollegiate to open March, finished in the middle of the pack in the opener at The Border Olympics and tied for ninth at the Seminole Intercollegiate two weeks ago.
One constant has been Jake Springer for head coach Clay Bounds, as he has led Troy in all three spring events and in five of the eight events this year. He carries a 72.33 stroke average and 0.58 score vs. par into the weekend, both tops on the team, while his seven rounds under par rank as the second most.
Laurenz Kubin is second to Springer with a 72.67 stroke average on the year but he will be making just his third appearance and first since mid-October, while Gage Carnes and George Burch are making their first appearance of the spring. Brantley Scott rounds out the lineup for the Trojans with six rounds under-par this year.
Teams open play with 36 holes on the par-72, 7,086-yard course Saturday at 7:30 a.m. (CT) and play concludes with 18 holes on Sunday.
