TROY, Ala. – On Friday afternoon, the Troy women's tennis team concluded its most successful regular season since joining the Sun Belt as it won its eighth straight match as they defeated Coastal Carolina 5-2 on Friday at the Lunsford Tennis Complex.
Troy (15-6, 9-2 SBC) started its conference slate slow, going 1-2 through its first three Sun Belt matches before winning out. A key to the Trojan's impressive winning streak has been its ability to get going early, especially in doubles. The Trojans, who won the doubles point on Friday, are now 12-0 when taking a 1-0 lead.
Kristina Kukaras and Emilia Namyslo jumped out to the first doubles match with a 6-2 win. Valeriia Avdeeva and Maria Guirguis clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 victory in the number two doubles spot.
The third doubles match went unfinished, with Troy leading 5-3.
Leena Metwally quickly added to the Trojan lead in singles to make things 2-0 with a 6-2, 6-3 win on court five. Metwally had an impressive regular season as a freshman, going 15-4 (7-3 SBC) in the spring.
Coastal Carolina cut the Troy lead in half with a 6-4, 6-2 win on court three to make it 2-1. The Chanticleers tied things up at two with a 6-2, 6-2 win on court two.
The Trojans returned to their winning ways on court six as Gabrielle Leslie recorded her team-best 18th singles win of the spring with a 6-4, 6-3 win. Leslie has won the last seven matches that were finished and is 8-1 in Sun Belt play. Her lone loss of the spring came at Marshall while playing indoors.
The match was clinched on court four, as Avdeeva put together an impressive 7-6 (9-7) win on court four.
The final match on court one was played out despite Troy already having won the dual. Kukaras, who dropped the first set 6-0, rebounded with two straight sets to win the match 0-6, 6-4, 6-1. Friday was Kukaras's last time playing at the Lunsford Tennis Complex, as she is set to graduate this spring.
The Trojan's nine Sun Belt wins are the most in the program's history.
