ROME, Ga. – The Troy women's tennis team continues it journey for a conference championship after it defeated Georgia Southern 4-2 in the quarterfinals of the Sun Belt Tournament on Friday afternoon at the Rome Tennis Complex.
Troy (16-6) will play in the semifinals for the first time since 2018 as it takes on App State on Saturday afternoon, with the first serve set for 12 p.m.
The Trojans continued to dominate in doubles and moved to 13-0 this season when taking a 1-0 advantage. It didn't look good early, however, as Georgia Southern (18-6) won 6-0 on court one in doubles to quickly take the early advantage. The Trojans responded in swift fashion as the All-Sun Belt Second Team pairing of Leena Metwally and Hagar Ramadan-Amin picked up a 6-2 win on court three.
The first point of the match came down to the number two doubles spot, as Kristina Kukaras and Emilia Namyslo stepped up with a 6-2 win to secure the 1-0 lead.
The Eagles weren't going down quietly, as they grabbed the first two singles matches on court four and court one to take a 2-1 lead.
Metwally leveled things for the Trojans with a 7-5, 6-3 win on court five. The freshman star is now 16-4 in singles this spring and 8-3 against Sun Belt opponents.
Following Metwally's victory was a strong showing from Maria Guirguis who had an impressive 7-5, 6-2 win on court three to put the Trojans within one point of the match victory and a trip to the semifinals.
To do this, the Trojans turned to Gabrielle Leslie, who has led the team in victories all season. The junior newcomer picked up a 6-2 win in the first set. The second set went to a tiebreaker, with Leslie outscoring her opponent 7-2 to secure the match with a 7-6 win. Leslie now moves to 19-1 this season and 9-1 in conference play.
The final singles match on court two went unfinished with each team winning one set.
The Trojans will get a chance at redemption as they will take on App State for a trip to the championship match. The Mountaineers defeated Troy 4-0 at home earlier in the season.
