TROY, Ala. – Troy fell in a tough loss to ULM 4-3 at the Troy Softball Complex on Friday night in the series opener.
Troy (25-16, 7-6 SBC) saw eight of its starters pick up a hit tonight off the ULM (26-15, 9-4 SBC) pitching staff.
After a quiet first two frames, Sarah Beth Brake opened the Trojan offense with a solo lap around the bases to give Troy an early 1-0 lead.
The Warhawks answered back in the top of the fourth inning by loading the bases on two hits and a walk with Jacelyn Buck at the plate. Buck ripped one down the left field line, scoring two runs before a relay from Anslee Finch to Natalie Turner at third ended the inning 2-1.
Libby Baker opened the home half of the inning by mashing the first pitch she saw over the wall to tie the game up at 2-2. Audra Thompson followed Baker's footsteps by ripping her first pitch to left field for a single with Finch behind her in the line-up. Finch put the Trojans on top with her eighth double of the season to score Thompson, at 3-2.
Troy would not enjoy the lead for long as ULM would load the bases on one hit, one walk and a Troy error. With two outs on the board, Meagan Brown would double, scoring two Warhawks and taking a 4-3 lead where it would stay the rest of the night.
Briston Bordeau picked up her first win of the season for the Warhawks, pitching 2.2 innings and punching out two Trojans.
Baker was tagged with her eighth loss after pitching six innings for the Trojans. Baker punched out one while giving up seven hits on the evening. Haley Pittman saw an inning of relief for Baker, where she punched out one batter out of the four she faced.
Thoughts from Eric Newell
"It was a hard-fought game. Hats off to ULM for executing in clutch situations. We had a couple of areas, whether it be offensively or defensively, where we just needed one more hit or one more play and we just couldn't come through in that area. But hats off to ULM and we look forward to playing them tomorrow."
