TROY, Ala. – The Troy women's tennis team, coming off a perfect 2-0 weekend at home, hits the road for a three-match road trip that opens on Saturday in Atlanta against Georgia State at 9 a.m.
Troy (9-6, 3-2 SBC) defeated Southern Miss and South Alabama at home last weekend to get them back on track in conference play. The Trojans were led by Leena Metwally and her perfect 4-0 weekend, as she won both of her singles and doubles matches.
The Trojans had struggled in doubles going into the weekend, losing the point in six straight matches before claiming an early 1-0 lead singles record in both weekend duals. Troy is 6-0 this season when winning the doubles point.
In singles, Troy went 7-2 this weekend to improve its overall spring singles record to 48-36. Leading the team in singles so far this spring is Gabrielle Leslie and her impressive 12-1 record. Metwally picked up her 10th singles win of the spring on Sunday with an impressive come-from-behind 5-7, 7-5, 10-7 win. Leslie and Metwally have combined to go 22-4 in spring singles.
On Sunday against South Alabama, Maria Guirguis picked up the clinching point with a 6-4, 7-6 (7-2) win. The Trojan's win over the Jaguars was its first since the 2013 season. Prior to the win, Troy had lost the previous 11 meetings.
Scouting Georgia State
The Panthers enter Saturday's dual with a 5-11 record, including 1-4 in Sun Belt Play. However, they have performed better at home than on the road this season. When playing in Atlanta, GSU is 3-2 compared to 2-8 away from home.
Alba Retortillo leads GSU in singles wins with seven. Francesca Miglio and Maria Paredes are right behind her with six wins each. The doubles pairing of Miglio and Paredes has been strong, as they have a team-best 6-4 record.
