TROY, Ala. – The Troy women's tennis team capped off its first home conference weekend with a crucial 5-2 win over South Alabama at the Lunsford Tennis Complex on Sunday afternoon.
Troy (9-6, 3-2 SBC) picked up its first win over South Alabama since 2013. The Trojans were 0-11 since then going into Sunday's dual.
For the second consecutive day, the Trojans got ahead early thanks to strong doubles play. South Alabama opened the day with a 7-5 win in the first doubles spot, but the Trojans responded quickly as Hagar Ramadan-Amin and Leena Metwally won 6-3 in the No. 3 spot.
The match's first point of the game came down to the No. 2 spot, and Kristina Kukaras and Emilia Namyslo stepped up with a 7-5 win to give Troy the early 1-0 advantage. Troy is now 6-0 this season when winning the doubles point and going ahead 1-0.
In singles, Troy extended the lead to 2-0 thanks to a 7-5, 6-1 win on court three from Valeriia Avdeeva. However, South Alabama answered back with two quick wins on court one and court two to tie things up at 2-2, and things seemed to be trending in the wrong direction for the Trojans.
Gabrielle Leslie settled things back down on court six as she picked up a 7-5, 6-0 win to put Troy back on top. Leslie continues to be the most consistent singles player for the Trojans this spring, as she moves to 12-1 in singles this spring. Including the fall, Leslie has an impressive record of 20-5.
Maria Guirguis clinched the team win with a gutsy 6-4, 7-6 (7-2) win to give Troy the weekend sweep. The final match on court six went to a third-set super tiebreaker, with Metwally securing the come-from-behind 5-7, 7-5, 10-7 win.
