Women’s Tennis Pulls Out 4-3 Win Over Samford

TROY, Ala. – Coming off a pair of losses last week, the Troy women's tennis team put together a much-needed 4-3 win over Samford on Thursday afternoon at the Lunsford Tennis Complex.

Troy (6-3) struggled last week as they fell 5-2 against both Belmont and Middle Tennessee. The Trojans lost the doubles point in each of those games and opened Thursday with a poor showing in doubles. Samford (3-6) put together a 6-0 win in the No. 2 spot and a 6-1 win in the No. 3 spot to go up 1-0. The No. 1 doubles went unfinished with Samford leading 4-3. Going into Thursday, Troy was 1-3 when losing the doubles point.

The Trojans answered back to open singles, as Leena Metwally won 6-4, 6-4 on Court 5 to level the score at 1-1. She is now 7-1 on the season. Samford jumped ahead 2-1 with a 7-5, 6-3 win on Court 1.

Gabrielle Leslie continued her perfect singles season with a huge come-from-behind 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 win on Court 6. She is now 9-0 in singles this season and was the Sun Belt Women's Tennis Player of the Week last week. The Trojans took a 3-2 lead thanks to Valeriia Avdeeva's 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) win on Court 4.

Samford wasn't going to go down without a fight as they once again tied things up with a 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 win on Court 2.

The match came down to the No. 3 singles, and Troy looked to Maria Guirguis to break the slump, and she did just that. Guirguis lost the first set 3-6 but responded with a 7-6 (7-5) win in the second set. With the team victory hinging on the final set, Guirguis dominated her way into a 6-1 win to seal the deal for Troy.

The Trojans move to 12-12 in doubles this spring and 34-20 in singles.
