Women’s Tennis Drops Tight Battle to Mercer in Final Non-Conference Match

TROY, Ala. – The Troy women's tennis team fought an intense dual against Mercer on Saturday afternoon at the Lunsford Tennis Complex, but came up just short as it fell 4-3 to close out its spring non-conference schedule.

Troy (6-4) once again struggled in the doubles portion of the match, as the Trojans fell 6-0 on in the No. 1 spot and 6-3 in the No. 2 spot. Troy is now 4-6 in doubles this season and has dropped the doubles point in four consecutive matches. The Trojans are just 2-4 this season when dropping the first point.

Despite Mercer (7-3) getting off to a hot start in doubles, the Trojans answered right back to open singles play as Leena Metwally won 6-3, 6-3 on Court 5 to level the score at 1-1. The freshman moves to 8-1 on the season and has won five straight singles matches.

Mercer once again jumped ahead after securing a 7-5, 6-4 win in the No. 1 spot and got within one point of the match victory with a 7-6 (7-4), 7-5 win in the No. 3 spot. The Trojans weren't going to go down without a fight as Hagar Ramadan-Amin bounced back after losing her first set to grab a 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 win on Court 2.

Mercer, however, held off a late Trojan comeback with a 6-1, 5-7, 6-3 win on Court 4 to seal the deal and pick up the team win.

The final singles match was played out, as Gabrielle Leslie continued her perfect start to the season with a 6-2, 5-7, 6-1 win in the No. 6 spot. She moves to 10-0 this season and has won 16 of her last 17 matches dating back to the fall season.
