TROY, Ala. – Troy men's golf opens its spring season Monday and Tuesday at the Border Olympics hosted by Houston at the Laredo Country Club. Teams will play 36 holes on Monday and 18 on Tuesday on the 7,375-yard course.Â
Â
"The guys are super excited to get the tournament season, the spring season started," head coach Clay Bounds said. "It's going to be a long spring, so we need to get off to a good start. The golf course looks great, and the whole town of Laredo does an amazing job supporting the tournament. The guys are ready to play; we've practiced and qualified well and have a good five to make a run at the win."
Â
Bounds' lineup features a veteran presence at the top in Brantley Scott (74.47) and Jake Springer (72.20) leading the charge, followed by Nick Fowlkes (72.33), Will Simpson (74.00) and Lee Poppell (72.56).
Â
"We need to keep the ball in play," Bounds said. "I've played and coached at this course before, and keeping the ball in play off the tee is key as it's a residential course with houses on both sides and a lot of out of bounds to deal with. All the guys are hitting their driver well heading into the tournament."
Â
Among the five in the tournament, Springer led Troy in the fall with five rounds under par and three rounds in the 60s, while Poppell and Fowlkes had three rounds under par. Scott shot in the red twice; both crossed the 60s threshold.
