TROY, Ala. – The Troy men's tennis team opens its fall season this weekend at the prestigious ITA All-American in Tulsa, Okla., at the University of Tulsa Michael D. Case Tennis Center. Five Trojans are set to compete against the best the country has to offer beginning Saturday.
"We are super excited to go to a big tournament," head coach Rolando Vargas said. "We are taking a lot of players to give them an opportunity to play against elite competition and see how they manage the situation. The fall is very important individually because you play against opponents who give you the opportunity to get ranked. It helps our guys get into a rhythm and feel the pressure of playing college matches again."
The reigning Sun Belt Freshman of the Year and Sun Belt Player to Watch, Mario Martinez Serrano, earned a bye into the qualifying round, which opens play on Monday. The Troy sophomore finished the 2203 season ranked No. 19 in the ITA Southern Region in singles, the second-highest-rated non-SEC player. He led the Sun Belt with 20 wins during his freshman season as he posted a 20-3 record in dual matches, with 19 of the 20 victories coming on court one.
"I'm looking forward to seeing Mario's development," Vargas said. "He has practiced really hard over the summer and played in some tournaments. He understands now that he has a big task because people know who he is, and they are going to bring their best to beat him."
Carles Anton, Benjamin Ambrosio, Yerary Andres Pastor and Nicolas Simkin will all play in the pre-qualifying round, which opens with the first and second rounds on Saturday.
Anton enters his senior season as a three-time All-Sun Belt selection in singles, landing on the first team the past two years. Ambrosio begins his first year at Troy after transferring in from LSU, where he posted a 14-9 record as a junior last season. Pastor finished his freshman campaign with a 15-8 singles record during the spring, while Simkin returns after missing last spring.
