Tremayne Cobb Jr.’s Eight RBIs Powers Troy to Series-Clinching Victory

Troy (33-15, 13-10) used 18 hits with three home runs, including two from Cobb Jr, who finished with five hits, becoming the first Trojan to have a five-hit game since Logan Cerny back in 2021. In addition, Troy played clean baseball committing no errors on the day. Troy has now scored 31 runs over the first two games, and Cobb Jr. becomes the second Trojan this season to have an eight RBI game joining Lewis, who did it against USC-Upstate.
Lewis is on the verge of history as he is one home run away from becoming the all-time leader for home runs in a single season. His 26 home runs are the most by a Sun Belt player since 2009, and he now is in a tie for most home runs in the country this season. Georgia Southern didn't want much to do with Lewis as he walked three times but came around to score five times.
The Trojans have now won 33 games on the season, surpassing last year's total of 32 wins coming in head coach Skylar Meade's first season.
William Sullivan, Kole Myers, and Kyle Mock each had five hits, with Sullivan recording four RBIs and his 16th home run of the season and Mock finishing with two runs batted in.
Picking up the win for Troy was Ross (3-1), who made his fifth start of the year and went 4.2 innings allowing only one run on six hits with five strikeouts. Matt Mercer, Brandon Schrepf, Ryan Pettys, and Mason Kenney finished things out of the bullpen.
Ga'von Wray (3-3) is given the loss as the Georgia Southern (23-23, 13-10) starter went 2.2 innings allowing four runs on five hits and only one strikeout. The Trojan offense scored a run on all but one Eagle relief pitcher.
Jarrett Brown brought in three of the five Georgia Southern runs as all nine starters had a hit, with JP Tighe leading the way with three.
Four runs in the third inning jump-started the Trojan offensive output as Sullivan brought in the first run of the game via a sacrifice fly, followed by Cobb's first three-run home run of the game.
Despite the Eagles getting one of those runs back in the top of the fourth, Troy responded with three more as Lewis and Sullivan hit back-to-back home runs, and Mock singled to make it 7-1.
Troy scored nine runs over the course of the final four innings as Cobb had hit his second three-run home run in the sixth and singled in two more runs in the seventh.
Georgia Southern did their best to try and get back in the game, having loaded the bases in the fifth and sixth but only coming away with two runs as Mercer and Schrepf each got out of the jams.
The Trojans leave Saturday with 90 home runs on the season, putting them alone in fourth place for most in a season, and with 502 strikeouts by the pitching staff, they rank sixth for most by a team in Troy history, with the record being 541 in a season.
These two teams enter the series finale tied for fourth in the conference, one game back of third place, as they wrap up the weekend on Sunday, May 6th, at 1 p.m.
