HUNTINGTON, W.V. – The Trojans were held hitless and down a run through the first three innings of Sunday's matchup with Marshall but Troy broke out their bats in the fourth, scoring three runs on three hits to go on and win 4-2 over the Thundering Herd to complete the sweep.
Marshall (15-34, 5-22) got the first two outs of the fourth frame before Tremayne Cobb Jr. started the rally with a single to center field. A walk to Ethan Kavanagh put two men on for Brooks Bryan. Bryan made his first start since April 11th and singled to left field to tie the game at two.
Troy (36-17, 16-11) took advantage of two Marshall errors to score runs as the second brought home the winning run for Troy as Kavanagh crossed home plate after a throwing error by the catcher. The third hit of the inning from Clay Stearns brought home the third run of the frame to make it 4-2, where it would end five innings later.
Zach Fruit (6-1) got the start and pitched five solid innings allowing only two runs on six hits and two walks to go along with five strikeouts. Picking up his first save of the season was Kristian Asbury, who followed Fruit and allowed only one base runner in four innings of work, striking out seven.
The 12 combined strikeouts give Troy a total of 544 on the season, which is a new program record surpassing the 541 strikeouts set in 2006.
Zac Addkinson (3-7) went seven innings, allowing all four Trojan runs, with only two of them being earned. He struck out eight and walked two while giving up the four Trojan hits. Ryan Capuano came out of the Herd bullpen and kept the game close going two innings and not allowing a Trojan base runner.
Both of Marshall's runs came in the first two innings, as neither team had an extra-base hit. In addition, both teams had left five men on base as each of the three games was decided by three runs or fewer.
William Sullivan got Troy on the board first with a sacrifice fly in the first inning. Troy is now 24-6 when they score before their opponent.
Troy will wrap up the 2023 regular season beginning on Thursday, May 18th at 6 p.m. as they host Appalachian State for a three-game series at Riddle-Pace Field.
