TROY, Ala. – A two-win Thursday afternoon had Troy softball triumph over Coastal Carolina in both games, 9-0 and 8-7, respectively, to win the series on day one at the Troy Softball Complex.
Leanna Johnson (21-3) secured both wins in the pitcher's circle as the Trojans (28-9-1, 9-1-1 SBC) clinched their fourth straight series victory to start Sun Belt play while the Chanticleers (28-12, 5-6 SBC) drop below .500 in league play.
Game One: Troy 9, Coastal Carolina 0
For the second straight game, the Trojans run-ruled their opponent. Game one of its doubleheader against CCU saw Taylor McKinney end it in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run homer over the left field wall, 9-0.
Inning one saw the first two batters, D'Aun Riggs and Taylor McKinney, earn walks on nine total pitches, followed by a wild pitch to put both in scoring position. Then, on a full count, Sinness fouled over to third base on a pop-up. Riggs managed to tag up with plenty of time to get home for Troy's first run of the ballgame. Then, Coastal's catcher Maddy Jennings muffed the throw to third base as McKinney tried to advance, resulting in a second run, 2-0, for Troy early.
Kelly Horne put the punctuation mark on the inning after Libby Baker struck out and Anslee Finch walked on a full count. On her fifth pitch of the at-bat, Horne let one rip to left-center as Finch advanced from first to home, 3-0.
After Kennedi Gaton singled to right center for Troy's fourth run, 4-0, the Trojans struck with another three-run inning in the fifth. The fifth had three straight batters reach as McKinney singled to center, Sinness to middle and Baker to third base. Finch made it a fourth on a bunt to the pitcher, but McKinney was caught at home.
The runs came on a wild pitch by Nicolette Picone with Horne at the plate. The ball sailed over the catcher, which brought in Sinness, 5-0, and advanced Natalie Turner – pinch runner for Baker – and Finch. Horne – ended the doubleheader with four RBIs – finished the job, 7-0, when she singled to left field to score both runners.
Game Two: Troy 8, Coastal Carolina 7
Leadoff batter Diamond Williams homered off Olivia Cato on the first pitch in game two, 1-0, to set the pace for CCU.
The Trojans responded by putting six runs on the board, starting with Riggs, who singled to left and then advanced to third on a passed ball and steal. McKinney followed her by walking on a 4-1 count and stealing second. Bases were loaded when Sinness got hit by the pitch and Baker only needed to tap it to first to bring in the tying run, 1-1, and advance all the runners despite getting out. Finch broke open the floodgates by doubling to right-center and Horne kept it open by singling straight up the middle, 4-1.
Troy reset and charged again when Audra Thompson was hit by the pitch with Horne already on second. After substitutions for CCU, Gaton advanced Horne to third and was safe at first despite Thompson being caught going to second. Katelynn de Leon brought in the fifth run on a single up the middle before Riggs grabbed her second hit of the inning on a double to left field to put the punctuation mark on a six-run inning.
CCU didn't quit, as an error by Riggs allowed the Chanticleers to score their first run at the top of the second, followed by another on a double steal, 6-3. The comeback continued in the fourth on another error by Riggs which allowed two runners to advance to scoring position before Indya Smith went to right field for a two-RBI single, 6-5. After that, multiple pitching changes happened before Delaney Keith doubled to right field with a runner on first and second to score the tying run, 6-6.
The bats reconnected for Troy at one run apiece over the next two innings. At the bottom of the fourth, de Leon grabbed her second hit on the night on a double down the left field line – Turner entered as a pinch runner. Turner advanced on a passed ball to third, setting McKinney at the plate with one out, and she let one fly to center field and to bring in Turner, 7-6. Finally, Baker opened the bottom of the fifth and found her pitch after fouling off her previous two. The first baseman ripped one over the left field wall, providing enough cushion for Troy, 8-6, as Williams homered her second of the game in the sixth for Coastal.
Johnson shut down any chance for a second comeback in the seventh, 8-7, when she ended the inning in four pitches off a groundout, strikeout and lineout.
With the updated weekend schedule, Troy prepares for its third and final game against Coastal Carolina tomorrow at 1 p.m.
