TROY, Ala. – The Troy, Louisiana series comes to a split 1-1 after a 9-2 loss on Saturday afternoon in the Troy Softball Complex.
After being held silent through the first three innings, the Ragin' Cajuns (35-13, 15-2 SBC) rattled off 10 hits to the Trojans (30-14-1, 11-5-1 SBC) one in the remaining four.
Troy struck first in the bottom of the third after Katelynn de Leon started it from the eighth spot. The catcher battled through eight pitches before finding her ball for a single down the left-field line. With Katie Lively subbed in to pinch run, Emma Grace Walker laid a sac bunt to advance her to scoring position. However, Jade Sinness ensured that Lively's position didn't matter as she homered one to right field for a 2-0 advantage.
The Ragin' Cajuns came back in the top of the fourth with a pair of singles from Alexa Langeliers and Sophie Piskos that were split with two outs. Louisiana called Laney Credeur in to pinch hit with runners on second and third. On a full count, Credeur singled to right center, which cleared the bases and tied the game 2-2. With Maddie Hayden reentering after Credeur's hit, another pitch hitter in Stormy Kotzelnick doubled to left field to take the lead, 3-2.
Matters turned worse for the Trojans in the fifth as leadoff batter Mihyia Davis rocketed her first pitch to right center, 4-2. A single by Langeliers and a double by Karly Heath set up Piskos at the plate with two runners in scoring position. The designated hitter drilled one to the shortstop, who got her out at first. However, as runners aimed to advance, Baker made an error on the throw to score Louisiana's fifth and sixth runs, 6-2. Lauren Alred kept the pressure on Troy when she made it a four-run inning for Louisiana with a solo shot to right field, 7-2.
Home runs kept coming for the Cajuns as solo shots from Taylor Roman in the sixth and Heath in the seventh racked Louisiana's lead up to 9-2.
The Trojans rotated through the bullpen, with Leanna Johnson (22-6), Olivia Cato, Brookelyn Cannon and Haley Pittman all having an opportunity against the Cajuns. But, in the end, Meghan Schorman (13-6) entered in the third and quietly prevailed for Louisiana through the help of her defense.
With the series on the line tomorrow at noon in the Troy Softball Complex, the Trojans look to end a streak of 73 series wins in favor of the Cajuns that started in 2013.
