TROY, Ala. – After a fall schedule that saw multiple draw champions and a top-125 ITA player ranking, the Troy women's tennis team kicks off its spring schedule with the home opener against Florida A&M in the Lunsford Tennis Complex on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
Saturday marks the first match for the Trojans since they competed for three days in the Stetson Hatters Invitational back on Nov. 3-6. It's also the first dual match for freshmen Maria Guirguis and Valeriia Avdeeva.
Where'd We End Off?
The fall season saw Olivia Elliott and Kristina Kukaras take home the gold in a draw as Kukaras found herself ranked No. 99 in the ITA Top 125. The junior saw victory at the Roberta Alison Fall Classic in the Patti Farmer Singles Draw. She claimed wins over Alabama, South Alabama and ETSU en route to the title.
Elliott had a 3-0 weekend to close out the fall schedule at the Stetson Hatters Invitational. The London native saw extra set victories over Saint Leo's Larina Lancellotti, Jacksonville State's Anna Syrova and Stetson's Laetitia Rizk. The pair of champs joined in seizing a doubles victory, 6-3, over Saint Leo to add to their accolades in the fall.
Reviewing the Rattlers
The Rattlers (0-2) still search for their first win and point of the spring season after getting swept, 4-0, in the first two matches against Florida Gulf Coast and Florida State.
None of Florida A&M's matches have come close to victory, with the opposition making quick work of the Rattlers. Sara Rakim gave A&M hope in her singles match against FGCU's Jordana Ossa. Rakim took care of business in the first set, winning 6-4. The second set saw the opposite result, as Ossa was one point from tying before the match was called after a 4-0 mark.
The last seven matches between the two have gone Troy's way, including last year when the team pulled out the 6-1 victory in Tallahassee. After doubles and a single's forfeit, the Trojans were up 2-0. Franziska Ahrend and Kukaras finished the job, winning in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0, and 6-4, 6-3, respectively.
