TROY, Ala. – After falling behind in doubles competition, the Troy women's tennis team battled back for five straight points to secure the 5-2 victory over Florida A&M at the Lunsford Tennis Complex Saturday afternoon.
For the third time in five years, the Trojans (1-0) won their season opener, while the Rattlers (0-3) are still searching for their first win of the year – scored first points of the season after starting 0-8.
"I am very proud of the girls and their overall performance as a team on the tennis court today," head coach Rawia Elsisi said. "It's our first match and a good win to start off the season."
Doubles competition saw the Trojans start slow after Franziska Ahrend / Chiara Desia Debarno and Hagar Amin / Kristina Kukaras fell, allowing A&M's first points of the season, 1-0.
Freshman Maria Guirguis got Troy back in order in straight sets for her first career dual-match victory, 6-1, 6-3. Then, last year's Sun Belt Newcomer of the Year followed up her fellow Egypt native, sweeping the Rattler competition, 6-4, 6-1 for the 2-1 Trojan lead.
Guirguis wasn't the only freshman to seize her first dual-match victory as Valeriia Avdeeva joined her with two hard-fought sets. Avdeeva captured the first set, 6-4, before taking the second set to an extra point, 7-5 – put Troy one point from victory at 3-1.
Olivia Elliott was flawless to start the season after winning her doubles match with Andrea Widing, 6-4, over Sandy Sierra / Sara Rakim. The junior lost the first set against Sandy in singles, 6-4, before battling back with a 6-2 victory in the second. Elliott left little doubt in the extra set as she shut her opponent out, 6-0, to capture the victory, 4-1.
