Troy Falls to Georgia Southern

Donovan Whibbs and Brandon Schrepf were responsible for driving in six of the Trojan's nine runs on the afternoon. Whibbs finished with two hits, including his second home run of the season, and scored three runs. Schrepf helped spur the Troy (29-17, 13-11) offense, launching a grand slam apart of a six-run sixth inning.
The Troy sixth inning also saw William Sullivan launch his sixth home run this year, giving the Trojans an 8-4 lead. Only one run would be scored after that for Troy, coming from a sacrifice fly by Trey Leonard.
Troy looked to tie the ball game with one out and runners at the corners, but a strikeout and a pop-up ended things giving Georgia Southern (32-15, 18-6) the series sweep.
Kyle Gamble started on the mound for Troy, going three innings and allowing six runs on six hits. Keaton Fuller (2-1) relieved Gamble and went three innings himself but took his first loss of the season after giving up three runs on two hits and four walks.
Georgia Southern wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, scoring twice in the bottom of the first inning, making Gamble work throughout.
The Trojans quickly erased the deficit in the top half of the second as back-to-back singles from Caleb Bartolero, and Easton Kirk quickly put runners in scoring position. A ground ball from Justin Kelley brought in the first run for the game, but the Eagle defense turned a double play to get out of a jam. Then, with the bases cleared, Whibbs stepped out and launched a game-tying solo home run.
The Eagles would go on to turn three double plays helping their pitchers get out of any trouble on the base paths. Jake Martin (3-1) gets the win going 3.2 innings holding Troy to one run on one hit.
Georgia Southern again responded with two more runs of their own to take a 4-2 lead in the second.
With the bases loaded in the top of the fourth inning and the Trojans down a run, Schrepf stepped up in a 2-2 count and launched a grand slam turning a one-run deficit into a three-run lead for Troy.
It is the first grand slam hit by a Trojan since Jesse Hall did it back on March 21, 2021, against Alabama State.
Two batters later, Sullivan continued to tack on runs with his sixth home run of the season to double Troy's lead 8-4.
As Georgia Southern had done all afternoon, the Eagles responded with three runs in the bottom half of the sixth to get within 8-7.
Three more runs in the bottom of the seventh gave the Eagles the lead for good.
