Â
TROY, Ala. – First-year Troy men's golf coach Forrest Schultz set an expectation of par for every round his team took the course. His team responded during five fall tournaments, and the Trojans look to continue their upward trajectory as they open the spring schedule this weekend at the Savannah Harbor Invite at the 6,750-yard Crosswinds Golf Club.
Â
The Trojans posted a 40-36-1 head-to-head record in the fall, which already represents a nine-win improvement from last year's overall head-to-head mark. Additionally, the Trojans posted five rounds under par as a team; Troy had four combined team rounds in the red the last three seasons.
Â
"Everybody is anxious to get back at it after four weeks of hard qualifying and competitive practices," Schultz said. "As you expect, some of the guys were rusty coming off the break, but they have really picked it up quickly, and we finished off qualifying playing some good quality golf."
Â
Will McFadden and Brantley Scott will anchor Troy's lineup going into Savannah as both played within a stroke of par during the fall and combined for 14 of Troy's 21 individual rounds under par. McFadden played more than half (8-of-15) of his rounds in the red, while Scott, a true freshman, led Troy with four rounds in the 60s and six total under par.
Â
Troy's 21 rounds under par match last year's total in half the number of rounds played, and the Trojans are more than nine shots better per round as a team when comparing stroke averages between the last two seasons.
Â
Nicklas Borrmann will lock down the number three spot for Schultz this weekend after posting a counting score in 9-of-10 fall rounds with two rounds under par and a 2.30 vs. par average. Jake Springer is in the lineup for his sixth straight tournament after a 3.13 vs. par average in the fall, and Reagan Harrell will make his third appearance of the year.Â
Â
"From day one, we said that we have to be consistent – shoot around par day in and day out," Schultz said. "That is our standard. Even par and one or two under par must be our standard, and we talk about it every day. That was a big key to our success in the fall and inherently allowed us to gain confidence as the season progressed. Everybody has the first tournament butterflies this weekend, but our expectations are the same – play solid golf, get around the course in a solid manner and post a good number."
