SAVANNAH, Ga. – Troy showed no signs of rust in its first action following the winter break as the Trojans shot 8-under par in Saturday's opening two rounds of the Savannah Intercollegiate and lead by six shots.
Troy shot even par in the opening round and came back with an 8-under 280 in the afternoon session. It's the second time this season that the Trojans have recorded a 280 after not having done so since 2014; it's just four shots off the school record.
Freshman Brantley Scott found the red in both of his rounds with a 5-under 67 in the morning and a 2-under 70 on his second trip through the course. Scott, who is in second place, has now played eight of his 17 career collegiate rounds under par with five in the 60s as he finished the day with 11 birdies.
Another Troy freshman, Jake Springer, is knocking on the door of a top finish as he is tied for seventh place at 2-under on the day after shooting even par in the opening round and 2-under in round two with a combined seven birdies.
Troy carries a 5-shot lead over Southern Illinois into Sunday's final round, while Wright State is six shots back of the Trojans and Miami (Ohio) is seven shots back in fourth.
Will McFadden is a shot back of Springer in a tie for 10th place at 1-under par. He opened with a 1-over before surging back to shoot 2-under 70 with five birdies in round two. Nicklas Borrmann shaved nine shots off his opening round tally to card a 2-under 70 in the afternoon. He carded five birdies to shoot 31 spots up the leaderboard into a tie for 37thplace, while Reagan Harrell is tied for 60th place at 9-over.
Troy will play for its first team win since winning the stroke play portion of the 2017 Sun Belt Conference Championship.
