COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – It was a back-and-forth affair Saturday afternoon from a hostile environment at the Hooper Ebler Center that saw Troy battle back from seven points down in the second half to win 75-72.
"That was a very hard-fought win," head coach Scott Cross said. "We knew it was going to be tough. But, I'm very pleased with how our guys responded and battled. I'm thankful we get to come home for two games and get back to work."
The Trojans (6-4) saw Nick Stampley lead the way as he finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds for his first double-double of the season. Efe Odigie and Duke Deen both finished in double figures, with Odige finishing with 12 points and Deen with 11 points. Troy shot 1-of-7 from the free-throw line in the first half but turned it all around in the second half where it connected on 13-of-16 from the line.
Tennessee Tech (2-8) was led by Keishawn Davidson, who had a game-high 19 points, followed by John Pettway, who finished with 17. The Golden Eagles had 14 turnovers in which Troy was able to convert into 23 points.
With Troy ending the first half down 39-37, Tennessee Tech came out in the second half on an eight-point scoring run over the first two minutes.
But Troy was resilient in climbing back in the game after a nine-point run of their own led by Deen, who knocked down a three and got an assist on a fast break finding Khalyl Waters for the layup to tie the game at 57.
Tennessee Tech followed with three straight points, and Stampley responded with a three to tie it again at 60.
A pair of Miles free throws gave the Trojans a two-point advantage with just under five minutes to go and pair of free throws on the following trip down the floor pushed the lead to four.
Stampley hit his third three of the game followed by a Christyon Eugene layup to give Troy its largest lead at 71-63 with just over two minutes left in the game.
The Golden Eagles responded and pulled within five and then two after a Trojan turnover leading to a Tech layup.
Following a timeout with 20 seconds remaining, the Golden Eagles pulled within one with three seconds remaining on a put back following a missed 3-pointer. Deen took the ensuing inbounds pass and calmly knocked down a pair of free throws to ice the game away.
Up Next: The Trojans return to action on Tuesday, Dec. 14, at 6 pm from Trojan Arena when they host in-state foe Alabama A&M.
