TROY, Ala. – The Trojans protected their home floor Tuesday night and saw season highs from Desmond Williams and Khalyl Waters as they defeated Alabama A&M, 66-57, from Trojan Arena.
"We want to build momentum, and we have done that by winning two in a row," head coach Scott Cross said. "The bottom line is that we still need to clean up things before we head into conference play, but I'm proud of how our guys stepped up and competed."
Troy (7-4) was led by Williams who finished with a game-high 19 points and four 3-pointers. Waters ended the night with 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the field, including a highlight-reel dunk in the second half.
Alabama A&M (1-7) was led by Jalen Johnson, who had a team-high 15 points and 14 points from Garrett Hicks. The Bulldogs finished with 20 turnovers while only shooting 25 percent from the 3-point line.
After Williams scored the first two points of the game, the Bulldogs went on an eight-point run that saw them get out to their largest lead of the game of six points. However, the run was stopped by a Duke Miles steal and fast-break layup.
The two teams saw little separation in the first half as they both traded baskets throughout as Troy shot 42 percent in the first half and Alabama A&M shot 40 percent.
With 29 seconds left in half and Troy down two, Zay Williams tide the game at 28 heading into halftime thanks to a monster dunk.
Just as the first half had ended, Zay Williams started the second half off by scoring down low to give the Trojans the lead, a lead that Troy would hold the entire second half.
Desmond Williams would follow, hitting back-to-back threes to give the Trojans their largest lead at 11 points forcing a Bulldog timeout.
The Trojans came into this matchup 12th in the country in forcing turnovers and added to that total tonight. Troy scored 19 points off Bulldog turnovers, including two fast breaks in which one Waters drove the lane for a highlight-reel dunk.
With under five minutes to go, Alabama A&M went two minutes without scoring a point in which Troy was able to go 5-of-7 from the field and hold a double-digit lead over the Bulldogs.
After a Bulldog three with 18 seconds to go, Desmond Williams sealed the game for the Trojans with a pair of three throws.
Up Next: The Trojans will try and make three straight wins as they host Arkansas Baptist on Saturday, Dec. 18, at 4 pm.
