TROY, Ala. – Coming off a top-half finish its last time out, the Troy men's golf team returns to the course Monday and Tuesday for the GSU Invitational at the 6,694-yard Berkeley Hills Country Club.
Under first-year head coach Forrest Schultz, the Trojans finished seventh among a 15-team field at the Graeme McDowell Invitational behind a top-five finish from Will McFadden. Led by McFadden's four rounds in the red, Troy already has eight individual rounds under par this year and two team rounds under par.
Thanks to three straight rounds under par, McFadden carries a 71.17 stroke average (-0.83 vs. par) into the Georgia State Invitational.
"Will is in a good spot in his game right now," Schultz said. "The way he is mentally and physically preparing each week is top-notch. Will is doing all the right things to be successful on the golf course, and he will be winning some tournaments soon."
Freshman Brantley Scott is coming off a 1-under 215 at the Graeme McDowell where he tied for 12th place. He carries a 73.17 average into the week with a pair of rounds under par this year. Nicklas Borrmann and Jake Springer are back in the lineup this week, while George Burch will make his season debut.
"Every week we are getting closer, and we are putting ourselves in position to turn in a good finish each week," Schultz said. "Our goal is still to win golf tournaments, and that is coming. This is a shorter course, and scores are going to be low. So we have to take advantage of our birdie opportunities because we're going to have our chances."
The Field
Troy, Georgia State, Bellarmine, Davidson, Florida A&M, Lafayette, Mercer, North Alabama, Oakland, Old Dominion, Richmond, Samford, VCU, Wright State, West Virginia, Western Kentucky
T-Time
Teams will play a shotgun start for Monday's 36 holes beginning at 7:30 a.m. (CT). Troy will be paired with Bellarmine and Florida A&M on Monday on the 10th thru 12th holes.
