Men’s Golf Second Following Day One of Argent Financial Classic

CHOUDRANT, La. – Three Trojans shot under-par, and Troy carded a 2-under as a team in Sunday's opening round of the Argent Financial Classic at the Squire Creek Country Club.
Troy sits in second place, just a shot behind host Louisiana Tech, following the first of three rounds. The Trojans' 2-under marks their fourth straight team round under-par to open the season.
Thomas Crane, Jack Lowery and Pablo Gracia are all tied for eighth at 1-under par, while Lee Poppell is tied for 22nd at 1-over and Lawton Emblom is tied for 58th at 5-over.
Trojan golfers combined for 18 birdies in the opening round, tied for the third-most in the field, paced by Lowery's five birdies. The first-year player has shot in the red in all four of his collegiate rounds. The Homewood, Ala., native did the majority of his damage on the par-4s, where he was 4-under, two shots better than anyone else in the field.
Crane and Gracia each added four birdies as the pair carded their third round under-par of the season. Poppell made the turn 1-under after a pair of birdies and stayed in the red until a double on his final hole of the day. Emblom birdied the par-5 second; all five Trojans picked up a stroke on the hole.
Louisiana Tech was led by a pair of golfers who shot 4-under and 3-under, giving the team a one-shot lead over Troy. Texas State is one shot back of Troy, while Jacksonville State and East Texas A&M are even par for a share of fourth. ULM and Louisiana are the other two Sun Belt schools in the event and are in ninth and 11th, respectively.
Teams continue play with the second round on Monday.
