1/22/2021 9:48:00 PM | Basketball (W)
TROY, Ala. – The Troy women's basketball team defeated Coastal Carolina 104-59 Friday night inside Trojan Arena while moving into first-place in the Sun Belt Conference East Division Standings. Troy's 45-point margin of victory was its largest margin of victory in a Sun Belt Conference game since beating Ga. Southern by 41 back on Dec. 29, 2017.
Troy (8-4, 4-1 SBC), shot 45 percent (38-for-84), its fifth best percentage of the season while holding Coastal Carolina (3-6, 0-5 SBC) to just 39 percent (23-59), its third-best shooting percentage of the season. Troy jumped on Coastal from the opening tip, scoring 37 first quarter points, its highest first quarter point total since scoring 33 against Talladega back on Dec. 12, 2018. In the first half Troy outscored Coastal Carolina 67-24.
"It was a really fun night in Trojan Arena," head coach Chanda Rigby said. "I thought we had a really good crowd, the players really played to the crowd and the energy in here. Our press was working really well, we created a lot of turnovers and got a lot of energy from that. Where I think we really got started off on the right foot was with rebounding. We came into the game and people were just rebounding and rebounding like Troy basketball and so we built more momentum and more energy."
How It Happened
Troy played its most complete game of the season Friday night. The Trojans dominated the Chanticleers on both offense and defense, opening the game on a 25-7 run before ultimately out scoring CCU, 37-12 in the first quarter. In the opening frame Janiah Sandifer and Tiyah Johnson each scored eight while Jhileiya Dunlap added seven. A big reason why they were able to score so many points early was due to Troy forcing Coastal into 10 first quarter turnovers. In the quarter Alexus Dye had three steals while Felmas Koranga and Jasmine Robinson each had two.
After scoring 37 points in the first, Troy didn't let its foot off the gas in the second. The Trojans got the second frame started with a 13-4 run, highlighted by eight points from Sandifer. Not to be out done, Johnson scored nine points during a second 13-2 run for Troy, as it closed out the half outscoring Coastal Carolina 67-24.
With the game well in hand after the dominating first half performance Troy scored a total of 37 points in the final two quarters combined. In the second half the Trojans were a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line and ended the game an impressive 21-for-22, 95 percent. It was Troy's highest free throw shooting percentage (at least 12 attempts) since 2016 when they went 15-for-15 against Little Rock. The Trojans did earn a 51-point lead in with 8:20 left in the fourtth quarter.
Who Stood Out
Jhileiya Dunlap had her best game as a Trojan Friday night. The senior from Columbia, S.C. filled up the stat sheet with an impressive 13 points, seven rebounds, three blocks, three steals and two assists. For the game Dunlap was 4-of-8 from the field and a perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line. She set season-highs in points, rebounds, free throws made, assists, steals and blocks.
Quoting Coach Rigby
"Our guards that started the game, Tiyah Johnson and Janiah Sandifer, they were playing defense, they were going to get big rebounds and they were scoring so they just did a great job all the way around. Alexus Dye with another double-double, Felmas [Koranga] came in and made some pretty impressive moves and shots so it was just a fun night."
On the turnovers forces
"It's all in timing and all in the night. We didn't do anything different this week in coaching the press than we normally did, but they just got their timing going. We call it like when one player moves you got to have a string on the next players foot to move as well and tonight they were just in sync with that string on the foot theory and every time one moved, the next one moved, which pulled the next one and it really worked out well."
