Troy Routs Coastal Carolina for Perfect Weekend
1/23/2021 8:15:00 PM | Basketball (W)
TROY, Ala. – For the second-consecutive night the Troy women's basketball team dominated Coastal Carolina from start to finish. After defeating the Chanticleers by 45 points on Friday, the Trojans turned around and beat CCU by 31 on Saturday, as they closed out their seven-game home stand with an 84-53 victory over Coastal Carolina.
Troy (8-4, 5-1 SBC) extended its season long winning streak to five on Saturday, despite being outshot by Coastal Carolina (3-7, 0-6 SBC). The Trojans shot 41 percent (35-for-85) while the Chanticleers shot 48 percent(24-for-50). Although Troy was impressive offensively, it was the defense that really shined. After forcing 25 turnovers on Friday, Troy forced 26 on Saturday; highlighted by 10 steals, three 3-second calls, two shot clock violations and a 10 second call. Maybe even more impressive than forcing 26 turnovers as not allowing a single three-pointer to CCU (0-for-7). It was the first time since Feb. 22, 2018 against Louisiana that Troy has not allowed a three-pointer.
"We're proud of so many things," head coach Chanda Rigby said. "Coach Graf had both scouts and I'm proud of the job that she's doing and that all the coaches doing. The team is really coming together. We have big goals to win another Sun Belt Championship and were a long way from it but we are getting closer every day and it was a big boost this weekend."
How It Happened
In deja vu like fashion, Troy scored first and raced out to 15-4 lead and never looked back. Alexus Dye and Felmas Koranga got things going early, combing to score 10 of the teams 19 first quarter points while the team allowed Coastal to score just eight points, tied for the fewest points allowed in a quarter this weekend.
The second quarter played out just like the first. The Trojans scored 11 of the first 15 points, which was capped off by a Tiyah Johnson triple. The second period was Troy's best offensive period of the night, scoring 26 points. In the first half Troy earned 12 CCU turnovers into 16 points.
Already owning a 45-22 lead when they went into the locker room, the Trojans blew the game open when things got restarted in the third. Troy opened the third on an 25-6 run, with seven different Trojans scoring at least two points. Troy eventually earned its largest lead of the game, 44, midway through the fourth quarter before eventually closing out the night with an impressive 84-53 victory.
Who Stood Out
Alexus Dye did what she does best, she scored points and grabbed rebounds on her way to her 10th double-double pf the season. Dye 12 points while earning 14 rebounds in just 19 minutes of action. Dye's 10th double-double moves her into sole possession of the most double-doubles in the country.
Quoting Coach Rigby
On Dye's NCAA Leading 10 double-doubles
"We can't overlook the fact that Alexus Dye is now leading the nation in double doubles. So in all of the United States of America we have Troy University up there #1 in double doubles and that's really a great statistic and we are really proud of that."
On getting a lot of playing time for the freshman
"It's huge because we have talented freshman but most everybody has talented freshman, but the advantage we have is our freshman are seeing things like national leaders and statistics and making really big things happen and big scores like what happened both nights here in Trojan Arena this weekend. So for the freshman to see that, doing big things sometimes is being able to see and believe you can do it so it's kind of getting in their blood to want to do it I think."
