TROY, Ala. – Troy baseball officially returns to Riddle-Pace Field for the 2020 season as the Trojans kick off a four-game series Friday at 6 p.m. The teams will play a doubleheader beginning at noon Saturday before the series finale Sunday at 1 p.m.
The Trojans return the experience necessary to take a step forward in Mark Smartt's fifth year at the helm. Troy will look to all-conference performers Rigsby Mosley and Drew Frederic to lead the way. Reigning freshman All-American Logan Cerny, senior Dalton Sinquefield and junior Reed Smith return a wealth of experience to the lineup.
Caleb Bartolero will take on the starting roll behind the plate in 2020 while newcomers Easton Kirk and William Sullivan will see time at third and first base, respectively. Freshman Kyle Mock is expected to get early opportunities in the lineup to start the season. Mock recently checked in at No. 80 on D1Baseball's list of the top 150 freshman in NCAA DI.
Levi Thomas will get the Opening Night nod on the mound for the Trojans after posting an 8-2 record in 2019. Junior College transfer Orlando Ortiz will get the start in game two while senior southpaw Max Newton will start in game three. Junior right-hander DJ Wilkinson earned the start for Troy in the series finale.
The Trojans return some valuable depth in the bullpen with the return of Lance Johnson. The right-hander made 36 appearances in 2019, all out of the bullpen, which tied for the fifth-most nationally and was the second-most in Troy single season history. Johnson was named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association's Stopper of the Year Watch List, which is given annually to the best relief pitcher in NCAA Division I.
SCOUTING NORTHERN KENTUCKY
Northern Kentucky is beginning its 20th season under head coach Todd Asalon after a 15-42 record last season. The Norse return a big bat in Griffin Doersching, who hit 13 home runs and posted a .503 slugging percentage in 2019. The junior is the reigning College Home Run Derby Champion after winning the event in Omaha over Ole Miss's Tyler Keenan. The Norse added 15 newcomers to their squad over the offseason and were picked to finish fourth in the Horizon League this season.
