Mobile, Ala. – The Troy men's and women's team both secured second place at the Azalea City Classic at the Brookley Field Golf Course on Friday evening.
The men's team tallied 42 points, finishing behind the host and winners of the Classic, South Alabama (29) in the eight-team field. The women's team earned their second consecutive second-place finish in as many weeks, tallying 44 points. South Alabama also took home the women's title with 27 points out of the seven teams.
Senior Brackin Stewart won the eight-kilometer race, marking his second individual victory as Stewart won the JSU Struts Season Opener 5k race to open the season last week. Stewart crossed the finish line in 26:32.9 which was 16 seconds faster than second place. Fellow senior Sawyer Sprung turned in a fifth-place finish with a time of 27:10.6 and junior Daniel Glick rounded out the top-three finishers for Troy with a seventh-place finish in 27:38.7. Also scoring for the Trojans was senior Brennan Garriques (12th place, 28:33.4) and sophomore Delaney Moore (17th place, 29:20.6).
"Brackin was lights out again," head coach Elliott Blount said. "Sawyer put together a good run and Daniel did well also. We had some fire power added back in the rotation and that really made a difference for us as a team performance."
The women were paced by freshman Caroline Sall who notched a fourth-place finish, improving her time from last week in the 5k in 19:28.6. Sophomores Kara Coulter and Michaela Ashley respectively finished seventh and ninth with times of 20:04.0 and 20:30.3. Senior Krystin Guirey finished 10th in 20:46.7 and freshman Tanner Guest finished 14th in 21:23.1 to wrap up the scoring for the Trojans.
"The women ran well," Blount said. "The women executed their own race plan. They got out in a certain position and was able to move up just like I hoped they would have done naturally."
"Overall, both teams got an A-plus for improvement from last week but there are still things we need to work on to perform even better."
