Clinton, Miss. – Three top-five finishes allowed the Troy women's cross country team to finish first overall while the men's team took third place in the 10-team field at the Watson Ford Invitational at Choctaw Trails on Saturday morning.Â
Â
The women racked up 41 points to secure the team title in the 10-team lineup. The men scored 78 points with Tarleton State (22) and Mississippi College (66) finishing first and second respectively.Â
Â
For her third consecutive race, freshman Caroline Sall paced the Trojans with a second-place finish in 23:03.10. Sophomore Kara Coulter followed behind Sall in the 6k race, crossing the finish line in third in 23:18.00. Fellow sophomore Christie Caruana turned in a fifth-place finish (23:32.30) in her first race of the season. Senior Krystin Guirey set a person record in 24:19.20 which gave her 13th out of 78 runners. Sophomore Michaela Ashley (24:54.20) rounded out the Trojan lineup, finishing 18th overall.Â
Â
"Our women had a very strong showing against this field," head coach Elliott Blount said. "We know in order to move up from 11th place last year we need more performances that mirror the effort we displayed today. We are fairly young up front but Guirey has done an amazing job leading this group."
Â
Senior Brackin Stewart paced the Trojans with a fourth-place finish in the 74-man field in 25:38.38. Fellow senior Sawyer Sprung ran the eight-kilometer race in 26:22.35, which gave him 13th overall. Junior Daniel Glick also turned in a top-20 finish, crossing the finish line in 16th in 26:28.26. Senior Brennan Garriques (27:21.00) and sophomore Delaney Moore (28:06.16) rounded out Troy's lineup finishing respectively in 23rd and 27th.
Â
"Men ran well all things considered," Blount said. "We are yet to run at full strength, so results won't pass many eye tests. That said, I saw enough this weekend to know with this veteran squad we'll be fine this Friday at FSU."
