Montevallo, Ala. – The Troy men's and women's cross country teams wrapped up the regular season at the Blazer Classic hosted by UAB with the men finishing in seventh place and the women took eighth place on Friday morning.
Â
The men scored 174 points just 19 points behind sixth place Tennessee. Florida State landed in first place in the 19-team field with 43 points. The women secured 237 points with Tennessee taking home the team title with 45 points out of 19 teams. Both teams saw multiple athletes set seasonal and personal bests at the Montevallo Course.Â
Â
Senior Brackin Stewart continued his stretch of pacing the Trojans by finishing 16th in the 133-man field in a personal best time of 25:02.57. Senior Sawyer Sprung (25:47.30) finished 35th while fellow senior Daniel Glick (26:02.70) finished the eight-kilometer race in 41st. Junior Bradley Dixon (46th, 26:24.06) and Brennan Garriques (49th, 26:31.28) rounded out the scoring for the men.
Â
"Brackin and Sawyer competed very well and three through seven was the best it's been since July 2014," head coach Elliott Blount said. "We are close but probably a step behind where we'd ideally like to be. We'll draw on the experience of a veteran group to know it will be there when the day comes."
Â
In the women's 6k race, sophomore Kara Coulter paced the Trojans with a 34th-place finish in a personal best time of 22:39.43. Freshman Caroline Sall finished 44th in the 142-women field in a season-best time of 22:50.57. Fellow freshman Tanner Guest (23:14.95) followed behind Sall, crossing the finish line in 55th-place. Sophomores Christie Caruana (63rd) and Michaela Ashley (86th) both posted season-best finishes with respective times of 23:26.31 and 23:56.98 to wrap up the scoring for Troy.Â
Â
"This group continues to impress me with how they just go to work on the course," Blount said. "Such a young team with an extremely promising future. Each one of them did things we had to do in order for us to be competitive at conference. The challenge for this young group is to do these things even better in a more intense environment."
Â
Additional Personal Records
Sophomore Thomas Ward set his personal record in the 8k race in 27:35.30. Senior Krystin Guirey turned in a personal best time of 24:18.11 in the 6k race less than a week after breaking her previous personal record at the Watson Ford Invitational.
Â
Up Next
Troy will have a week off before traveling to Mobile, Ala., for the Sun Belt Conference Championships hosted at South Alabama. The women will run a 5k while the men will take on an eight-kilometer trek. Both races will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
