No. 51 Troy & Moser Fire Record Rounds; Trojans Finish Sixth
3/12/2016 6:21:00 PM | Golf (M)
TALLAHASSEE, Florida – The No. 51 Troy men's golf team finished a wild seven-day swing Saturday with a sixth-place finish at the Seminole Intercollegiate at the Southwood Golf Club.
The threat of rain on Sunday forced teams to play 36 holes on Saturday and Troy's two rounds were polar opposites of each other. The Trojans shot a school-record 16-under par in the first round of the day as Luke Moser tied a school record with a 7-under 65. Troy's 272 was the second lowest score in school history, but the lowest on a par-72 course as the Trojans shot a 270 at the Sun Belt Preview back in the fall on the par-71 Raven Course.
However, the final round saw Troy shoot 13-over and slip from first place into sixth place. Freshman Calum Masters turned in his second straight outstanding performance as he finished in third place; he tied for sixth at the Tiger Invitational earlier this week.
Masters was the lone Trojan under par in the final round as he sank seven birdies to finish with a 6-under 66 after shooting a 3-under 69 in the first round of the day. After not shooting a round under par all year, three of Masters' last four rounds have been in the red.
Moser was in another world during Saturday's first round as he carded nine birdies to shoot 7-under par and tie Troy's single-round record. However, he struggled mightily in the final round with three double-bogeys and four bogeys to shoot an 81 and slip into a tie for 25th place.
Cam Norman and Clayton Vannoy both opened the day by shooting a 3-under 69. Norman had six birdies and an eagle in the round, while Vannoy had four birdies an an eagle – Norman tied for 35th place and Vannoy tied for 51st. The eagles both came on No. 1 as Troy played the hole to 9-under as a team with four eagles and a birdie. Jared Bettcher opened Saturday with a 78 and shot 80 in the final round to finished tied for 64th place overall.
No. 3 Auburn rallied to claim the team title by two shots over No. 4 Florida State; Troy finished eight shots off the pace, but five shots ahead of No. 48 Louisville and just two shots back of No. 23 Penn State.
Troy will take a much deserved break before returning to action at the Hootie at Bulls Bay on April 3-4 in Awendaw, S.C.
