No. 53 Troy in 12th Place After Day One of the Hootie

AWENDAW, South Carolina – The No. 53 Troy men's golf team shot a 9-over 297 on the opening day of the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate on Sunday. The Trojans sit in 12th place following the first of three rounds, but are just eight shots back of the top five.
Freshman Calum Masters and junior Clayton Vannoy led the Trojans with a 1-over 73 and the pair are tied for 30th. Vannoy made the turn at 4-over, but rebounded nicely on the back nine with three birdies over his first four holes after making the turn. Masters made the turn at 1-under after a birdie on No. 4 and played the back nine at 2-over.
Cam Norman is one shot back of his teammates in a tie for 38th place after shooting a 2-over 74. Norman sank back-to-back birdies to pull to even par heading to the final hole of the day, but a double-bogey pushed him back in the black.
Luke Moser and Jared Bettcher each had a pair of birdies on the day for the Trojans as they carded a 77 and 80, respectively. Moser ended the day in a tie for 63rd place and Bettcher is tied for 71st.
No. Charleston Southern shot a 15-under 273 to grab a four-shot lead over No. 16 South Carolina. No. 10 Wake Forest and Missouri are 11 shots back in a tie for third place.
Troy, Wofford and Akron will take the course together for Monday's second round and the pairing will open on the 10th tee beginning at 8 a.m. (CDT).
