TROY, Alabama – Following a successful fall campaign, the Troy men's golf team opens the spring portion of its schedule this weekend at the All-American Intercollegiate hosted by the University of Houston. The three-day, 54-hole event will take place on the Tournament Course at the Golf Club of Houston in Humble, Texas.
Troy enters the spring ranked 76th nationally by Golfweek and 80th nationally by Golfstat; the Trojans earned an at-large berth into the NCAA Regionals last season with a No. 57 national ranking by Golfstat.
The Trojans won the Sun Belt Preview in the fall, an event that featured 10 of the 11 league foes at the site of the Sun Belt Championship this spring. Additionally, Troy finished third among a strong field at the AutoTrader.com Collegiate Classic.
Under the direction of 14th year head coach Matt Terry, Troy posted a 33-22 record in the fall and a 13-1 mark against Sun Belt competition.
The field at the All-America will provide the Trojans an opportunity to improve its national standing as eight of the 16 teams are ahead of Troy currently in the Golfstat rankings and six ranking in the top 50 – No. 27 South Carolina, No. 30. Arkansas, No. 32. SMU, No. 34 Baylor, No. 38 Houston and No. 47 Charleston Southern.
The remainder of the field includes No. 63 Charlotte, Houston Baptist, Louisiana Tech, No. 79 McNeese State, New Mexico State, Northern Illinois, Rice, Sam Houston State and Texas-San Antonio.
Terry will send out a familiar lineup for the Trojans as Jared Bettcher, Luke Moser, Clayton Vannoy, Cam Norman and Calum Masters will play in the All-American Invitational.
Bettcher led the Trojans in the fall with a 72.71 stroke average and with all 14 of his rounds counting towards the team score. He finished with a team-best three top-10 finishes and four top-25 finishes in Troy's five events.
Moser was close on his heels as he finished the fall with a 73.00 stroke average and a team-best five rounds under par. Moser had the best finish of any Trojan in the fall as he took home second place at the Sun Belt Preview.
Terry also got a strong fall out of Vannoy, who shot a blistering 72.20 in opening rounds during the fall and finished with a 73.64 stroke average. Troy counted 13 of Vannoy's 14 rounds on the team card and he finished with four rounds under par. Norman also had four rounds under par during the fall and finished with a 74.21 stroke average, while Masters posted a 77.0 average during his first fall as a collegiate golfer.
Play opens at the 6,967-yard, par-72 course Friday morning with 18 holes. Troy will hit the links in the final grouping of the day at 10:30 a.m. and be paired with Northern Illinois and Charleston Southern.
