MOBILE, Alabama – The Troy men's tennis team remained unbeaten in Sun Belt play as it defeated rival No. 47 South Alabama on the road, 4-3, on Thursday at the Lebel Memorial Tennis Courts.
Troy (11-5, 4-0) set the tone early with doubles wins at No. 2 and No. 3. On court No. 2, Hassan Ndayishimye and Gabriel Dias blanked Juan Troglia and Manuel Belda, 6-0. After South Alabama (6-3, 0-2) got a win from its ranked doubles team at No. 1, Giovani Samaha and Austin Racine won in a tiebreaker at No. 3 for Troy, 7-6 (4), to give the Trojans the opening point.
Troy's singles lineup proved to be deeper than South Alabama's as the bottom of the Trojan lineup played well. Andy Lau, on court No. 3, started things off for Troy with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Belda.
Samaha then put Troy up 3-0 with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Olivier Gingras at No. 6. After South Alabama got on the board with a win at No. 2, Pablo Moreno clinched the match for Troy with a 7-6 (5), 6-2 win over Tuki Jacobs at No. 4.
South Alabama's Daniel Leitner, the nation's 60th-ranked singles player, won at No. 1 and South Alabama also won in three sets at No. 5 to close the gap in the final score.
Troy's win over the 47th-ranked Jaguars marked the program's first win over a ranked team since beating No. 33 Denver in the 2010 Sun Belt Championship match. Troy is now 1-4 against ranked teams this season with all but one of the Trojans' losses coming to a ranked team.
The Trojans return to the court on Friday, March 6 when they travel to take on Emory and Furman.
