Troy faces No. 47 South Alabama on Thursday in marquee Sun Belt match
NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana - For the fourth straight week, a Troy tennis student-athlete has earned a weekly award as men's tennis sophomore Hassan Ndayishimye was named the Sun Belt Male Tennis Athlete of the Week, the league announced on Wednesday.
The award comes on the eve of a critical match for the Trojans (10-5, 3-0), as they will travel to take on No. 47 South Alabama (6-2, 0-1) on Thursday at 1 p.m.
Ndayishimye, a native of Bujumbura, Burundi, posted a perfect week going 3-0 singles and 2-0 in doubles as Troy remained unbeaten in Sun Belt play and also nearly upset No. 20 Tennessee, falling 4-3 to the Vols.
The sophomore picked up a straight set victory over Tennessee's Hunter Reese (No. 16, ITA Ohio Valley Region) on court No. 2, 7-5, 6-4. Prior to that, Ndayishimye played at No. 1 against Sun Belt opponent Georgia Southern and beat Ristomatti Lanne, 6-3, 3-6, 6-0. Ndayishimye also picked up a straight singles win over Nicholls, 6-2, 6-4.
In doubles play, he and Gabriel Dias won on court No. 2 against Tennessee, beating Luis Valero and Bartosz Sawicki, 7-6 (1).
On the season, Ndayishimye is now 11-3 in singles play, including wins in his last five matches.
The award is the second of the season for Ndayishimye, who won the league's first award this season. For the fourth straight week a Trojan has won a Sun Belt weekly award as Dias won the award last week and women's tennis junior Trang Huynh won the Female Athlete of the Week award tow weeks ago.
Ndayishimye and the Trojans return to the court on Friday when they travel to South Alabama for a critical Sun Belt match against the Jaguars.
Troy is coming off of a 2-1 showing at its own Troy Trojans Jamboree last weekend, with the lone loss being the 4-3 decision to No. 20 Tennessee. South Alabama has five straight matches, including a win over then No. 41 Drake that catapulted the Jaguars into 47th in this week's ITA National Team rankings.
