Troy Narrowly Misses Upset of No. 20 Tennessee

TROY, Alabama – The Troy men's tennis team just missed a home upset as the Trojans fell to No. 20 Tennessee, 4-3, on Monday afternoon at the Lunsford Tennis Complex.
Troy (10-5) was down 3-0 in the match, but after straight sets wins got them within one at 3-2, the match turned to court No. 6 and court No. 4 where third sets were beginning. Giovani Samaha kept the Trojans alive with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 win over Brandon Fickey at No. 6 singles.
Tennessee (7-4), however, claimed the third set at No. 4 singles as Jess Jones defeated Pablo Moreno, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, to give the Volunteers the 4-3 win over Troy.
Four of Troy's five losses have come to ranked teams, including a pair of 4-3 decisions as the Trojans also dropped a 4-3 contest at No. 19 Ole Miss.
Tennessee opened the match with a win in a tight doubles point. Moreno and Any Lau lost at No. 1 doubles to Hunter Reese and Mikelis Libietis, the third-ranked doubles team in the nation.
Gabriel Dias and Hassan Ndayishimye tied the doubles point up with a 7-6 (1) win at No. 2 doubles for the Trojans, but Tennessee got the opening point with a 7-5 win on court No. 3.
Tennessee opened singles play with a pair of wins at No. 3 and No. 1 singles to take the 3-0 lead. The match on court No. 1 featured a pair of ranked players in No. 89 Dias and No. 13 Libietis, who won 6-2, 6-4.
Daniel Bustamante put Troy on the board with his 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 5 over Bartosz Samicki. Ndayishimye then got Troy within a point with a 7-5, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles over Hunter Reese, the 16th-ranked player in the ITA Ohio Valley Region Singles rankings.
Troy now turns its attention to a key Sun Belt match at South Alabama on Thursday. The Trojans enter the match with a perfect 3-0 record in Sun Belt play while the Jaguars have lost their lone Sun Belt match of the season, falling to UL Lafayette. First serve is set for 1 p.m. at the Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts.
