Hollimon Not Enough as Troy Falls to Austin Peay, 80-71
12/5/2015 2:44:00 PM | Basketball (M)
TROY, Alabama – Jeremy Hollimon's career-high 25 points wasn't enough as the Troy (4-4) men's basketball team fell to Austin Peay, 80-71, at Trojan Arena on Saturday afternoon. The Trojans were able to take a 41-38 lead with just under 17 to play, but couldn't complete the comeback.
Â
Hollimon shot 8-of-16 from the floor to lead the Trojans, including a 6-of-8 showing from downtown. Jordon Varnado, who is second in the nation among freshmen with double-doubles, narrowly missed his fifth career double-double as he finished with 13 points and seven boards. The Trojans' leading scorer, Wesley Person, finished the night with 12 points, all coming from beyond the arc.
Â
After trailing 36-31 at the break, Austin Peay's Chris Horton opened with a pair of free throws to extend the lead to 38-31. The Trojans went on their own 10-0 run to claim a 41-38 lead with 17 minutes remaining on the clock.
Â
Back and forth play ensued, until a 6-0 run by the Governors which was paired by a 3-plus-minute scoring drought by the Trojans, enabled Austin Peay to take its final lead, which Troy couldn't bounce back from.
Â
The Trojans were able to make it a two-possession game in the final minute, but free throw shooting secured the Austin Peay win, as it finished the night 21-of-27 from the charity stripe.
Â
To open the game, Troy capitalized on hot shooting to claim a quick 11-5 lead. A quick 14-3 run gave Austin Peay a 22-14 lead, which it held for the remainder of the half. Troy pulled within one at 22-21, following a 7-0 run of its own. Scoring droughts by both squads kept the game close as the Governors headed into the break with a five-point lead at 36-31.
Â
The Trojans finished the night shooting 38.3 percent (23-of-60) from the floor, and a season-best 42 percent (13-of-31) from the 3-point line. Troy was outrebounded 42-31.
Â
Austin Peay (4-5) was led by its leading scorer and rebounder, Horton, who tallied 21 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Horton, who ranks fourth in the NCAA in rebounds per game, secured eight offensive boards.
Â
The Governors shot 45.6 percent (26-of-57) from the floor, and 38.9 percent (7-of-28) from downtown. After struggling from the charity stripe against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in its last game, Austin Peay shot 21-of-27 (78 percent) from the free throw line.
Â
Troy hits the road for its three remaining non-conference games, as it first heads to Newark, N.J. to play Seton Hall at the Prudential Center on December 10.
