NEWARK, New Jersey โ The Troy men's basketball team fought until the end, however, a 20-3 run by Seton Hall was too much to overcome in a 78-69 loss at the Prudential Center on Thursday night. The Trojans were led by Jordon Varnado as he earned his fifth career double-double with 25 points and 11 rebounds, narrowly missing career high numbers.
ย
Varnado finished the night 9-of-13 from the floor, including 5-of-6 from downtown. Wesley Person finished the night with 14 points, his 33rd game in double figures, as he shot 4-of-10, in thanks to a 3-of-5 showing from downtown. Jeremy Hollimon also finished in double figures with 12 points.
ย
Troy (4-5) led for a majority of the first half after bouncing back from a 11-0 run by the Pirates, which gave them an 11-2 lead with 16:27 remaining in the first half. The Trojans fought tooth and nail to work their way back to lead 15-13 following a 13-0 run of their own at the 12:07 mark.
ย
After trading baskets with Seton Hall, the Pirates found some momentum and went on a 17-3 run to close out the first half, claiming a 36-30 lead.
ย
Seton Hall (7-2) continued its streak with a trey to start the half, to extend its lead to 39-30. Buckets by Hollimon and Peace chipped away at the Pirates' lead, however the Trojans were unable to get closer than five for the remainder of the contest.
ย
The Trojans outshot the Pirates, 43.3 percent (26-of-60) to 40 percent (26-of-65) from the floor, and also shot a season-best 52.9 percent (9-of-17) from long range. The tail of the tape was free throw shooting. Seton Hall secured 20 of its 78 points from the charity stripe, as it finished the night shooting 69 percent (20-of-29), while Troy shot 8-of-14 (57.1 percent) from the line.
ย
Seton Hall had five players score in double figures, while Desi Rodriguez (18 points, 11 rebounds) and Khadeen Carrington (12 points, 11 rebounds) ย who both secured double-doubles. Isaiah Whitehead led the Pirates with 20 points.
