ATLANTA – Despite hot shooting by Musa Abdul-Aleem and Wesley Person, the Troy men's basketball team fell to Georgia State, 77-72, at the GSU Sports Arena on Saturday. In the final minutes, the Trojans were unable to hold off the Panthers, as R.J. Hunter was able to shoot 6-of-6 from the charity stripe in the last minute to secure the win.
In a game of back and forth play, it came down to the final minutes. Troy was shooting hot until Georgia State was able to hold the Trojans scoreless for 2 minutes and 52 seconds. Prior to the drought, Troy was up 68-67. Georgia State took advantage as it went on a 6-0 run to regain a 73-68 lead.
Abdul-Aleem gave the Trojans a chance as he scored two on a missed 3-pointer as Troy trailed GSU, 73-70. The Trojans fouled Hunter in attempts to get the ball back, but Hunter sunk all six attempts.
Abdul-Aleem paced the Trojans with a career-high 33 points as he shot 56.3 percent (9-of-16) from the floor, including 7-of-11 from 3-point range. Person shot 50 percent from the floor on his way to 17 points, in large part to his 5-of-9 showing from downtown. Kelton Ford also tallied double-figures as he chipped in 10 points.
In the first half of play, the Trojans trailed by as many as seven with just over 11 minutes to go at 22-15. Troy then went on a 7-0 run, while holding Georgia State to a four-minute scoring drought, which allowed it to tie the game at 22.
Heading into the break, Troy (6-7, 1-3) held a 34-32 lead over Georgia State. Abdul-Aleem and Person each tallied double-figure points at 12 and 11, respectively. The Trojans shot 48 percent (12-of-25) from the field, including six makes from 3-point range. Troy outrebounded Georgia State 14-7 in the first half.
Hunter led Georgia State (10-6, 3-2) as he narrowly missed a career-high with 37 points as he took 20 of the Panthers' 44 shots. Hunter shot 9-of-20 on the night, and 4-of-10 from beyond the arc.
Hunter made a career-high 15 free throws on 17 attempts while also dishing out a team-high five assists. Georgia State was without its second-leading scorer, Ryan Harrow, as he sat out with an injury.
Troy ended the game shooting 46 percent from the floor and 48.1 percent from 3-point range. At the charity stripe, Troy shot a season-high 92.9 percent. In the offensive-heavy game, Troy was outrebounded 25-23, but managed to have a slight 16-14 advantage in second-chance points.
Next week, Troy travels to Monroe, La., on Thursday, January 15, to face ULM at Fant–Ewing Coliseum. Tip off between the Warhawks and Trojans is set for 7 p.m.
