Trojans Fight Hard, but Fall at ULM

MONROE, Louisiana – The Troy men's basketball game fought hard to take a late lead over ULM, but was unable to hold on as the Trojans fell to the Warhawks, 63-54, at Fant-Ewing Coliseum on Thursday night.

Freshman Wesley Person led Troy (6-8, 1-4) for the sixth time this season as he tallied 13 points, his 12th game in double figures. Person, who leads all NCAA freshmen with 2.9 3-pointers per game, shot 3-of-5 from downtown.

Kevin Thomas and Kelton Ford each chipped in 12 and 11 points, respectively. Ford finished the night 4-of-9 from the floor while Thomas reeled in a team-high seven rebounds, including five offensive boards. Chris Bilbo also tallied eight points on the night, including a career-high six assists.

ULM (10-6, 4-1) quickly jumped out to a 10-3 lead, as Person was the only Trojan able to get on the board as the squad shot 1-of-7 from the floor. Troy quickly rebounded as it went on a 7-0 run to tie the game up at 10 with 13:11 remaining in the first half. The Trojans, after starting the game 1-of-7, shot 7-of-15 as it trailed the Warhawks 24-18.

After back-and-forth play, Troy went into the break trailing ULM, 29-24. Thomas led all with eight points and four boards. The Trojans were able to hold the Warhawks to 10 percent (1-of-10) from beyond the arc.

To start the second half, Troy and ULM were hot from the floor as play continued to go back-and-forth. Troy was finally able to take its first lead of the contest, 49-48, on a big trey from Ford. However, ULM refused to back down as it went on a 9-0 run, while holding Troy scoreless for just under five minutes to take its largest lead of the contest at 59-49.

Majok Deng and Tylor Ongwae lead the Warhawks with 16 and 15 points, respectively. Ongwae tallied his second double-double of the season as he reeled in a game-high 10 rebounds.

The Trojans shot 50 percent (8-of-16) from downtown against ULM, who leads the conference in 3-point field goal defense and ranks 15th in the nation. Troy held ULM to 26.3 percent (5-of-19) from downtown.

The Trojans have a quick turnaround as they return home to face Sun Belt newcomer, Georgia Southern, on Saturday, January 17. Tip off between the Trojans and Eagles is set for 4:15 p.m., at Trojan Arena.
