Trojans Split to Open MT Shootout, Defeat DePaul

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – On a rain-soaked day one of the MT Shootout, the Troy men's tennis team split a pair of matches to open the eight-team tournament. Troy lost to South Alabama, 4-0, in the first round, but rebounded to shutout DePaul, 4-0, in the consolation bracket.

Troy (8-12) will now play Illinois State in Sunday's consolation bracket championship. Both of Saturday's matches featured only singles play in an effort to quicken play.

Despite two 4-0 scores, both of Troy's matches were highly contested, including the loss to South Alabama (9-9). Two of the Jaguars four wins came in three sets while both straight set matches were hotly contested as well.

The loss to South Alabama moved Troy to 0-2 in Sun Belt this season and was also the Trojans sixth straight loss. However, Troy rebounded against the Big East's DePaul in their second match.

Like the South Alabama match, the DePaul (4-14) match was close, but this time Troy came out on the winning end of two three set matches, both after dropping the first set.

Sami Ghorbel and Patrick Eichler each won in straight sets for Troy while Daniel Bustamante and Andre Stabile had to fight back in their wins.

Bustamante, at fourth singles, won his match 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, while Stabile, at fifth singles, won 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.
