Trojan Stampede Set to Open Thursday
11/14/2011 3:02:00 PM | Rodeo
The Troy University men's and women's rodeo teams will make their only home appearance of the fall season this weekend when the annual Trojan Stampede comes to the Pike County Cattlemen's Association Facility.
After being on the road for the first four events of the year, head coach Josh Simmons said the Trojans are excited about the home rodeo.
“We always look forward to the home rodeo especially since we only get one per year. It's also nice considering it's the last rodeo for everyone. Everybody is excited and glad to be off the road because it wears you out both mentally and physically,” Simmons said.
The Trojan Spurs have a lot to fight for this weekend. The women's team sits in second place in the eight team Ozark region with 815 points, 120 behind first place Southern Arkansas University.
The men's team sits in fourth place in the ten team region with 1,060 points. Missouri Valley College and the University of Tennessee-Martin are at the top of the standings with over 2,000 points. Troy is only five points behind third place Murray State. If the men want to finish the fall season with a top three finish, they'll need a strong weekend from everyone.
“We've got the home field advantage and everybody is comfortable in this arena. I expect them to be on their game,” said Simmons.
Troy also has some athletes at or near the top of the individual standings. Senior Brittney Drawdy heads into the weekend in third place in Barrel Racing with 230 points behind Murray State's Allyson Hayes and Kristen Yunker. Whitney Hazouri, also a senior, leads in the Breakaway Roping event with 290 points. Hazouri has won the event once this year and also has a victory in Goat Tying.
“The women started the year with a lead and we'd like to finish this semester with a lead. It builds momentum and it makes us more relaxed going into the spring semester,” Simmons said.
With this semester coming to an end, Troy looks to have a great weekend to finish out the fall season.
“The first and last rodeos are always the two most exciting ones. I feel confident about the weekend; we're just going to take care of business and see how we end up,” said Simmons.
Rodeo action will begin Thursday, Nov. 17 and continue through Saturday, Nov. 19. Gates will open at 5 with performances at 7 each night. Tickets at the gate will be $7 for children and $10 for adults, while advanced tickets will be $5 for children and $8 for adults. Fans can order by calling 1-800-414-5756 or email at ask@troy.edu. Like any other Troy Athletics event, Troy students will receive free admission with student I.D.
