Men’s Golf Tied for Sixth at Destin Collegiate

DESTIN, Fla. – Lee Poppell fired a 3-under 68 to lead the Troy men's golf team in Monday's opening round of the Destin Collegiate, hosted by Texas State at The Raven Golf Course. Poppell is tied for fifth place, while Troy is tied for sixth place, just five shots off the pace.

Poppell carded three birdies and 15 pars on the par-71 course to carry Troy's top bag on the day. All three birdies came on his first seven holes of the day, after he opened on No. 8. Poppell birdied the par-5 11^th and added back-to-back birdies on the 13^th and 14^th.

South Alabama and ULM are tied for first at 7-under, followed by Middle Tennessee (-6), West Florida (-5) and Mercer (-3). Troy is tied with Lamar and Austin Peay at 2-under.

Grant Yerger fired his best collegiate round, turning in a 69 with four birdies on his card and just a pair of bogeys to sit tied for 12^th following the opening 18 holes of play. Yerger leads the field with a cumulative 3-under par on the course's par-3 offerings. Pablo Gracia is a shot over par in a tie for 36^th place after carding four birdies in his round.

A trio of freshmen rounded out the field for the Trojans, with Landon Noble and Thomas Crane tied for 52^ndplace after rounds of 2-over, while Pierce Becker made his collegiate debut and is tied for 61^st place at 3-over, playing as an individual.

Teams continue play on Tuesday with the second round.
