TROY, Ala. – It's already been a busy summer for members of the Troy men's golf team, as a trio of Trojans qualified for their respective state amateur championships over the past several days – Lawton Emblom (Alabama), Lee Poppell (Florida) and Grant Yerger (Texas).
Emblom, a rising sophomore from Mountain Brook, Ala., won his qualifier, shooting 5-under in the one-round event at Bent Brook Golf Course in Bessemer on May 14. He birdied seven of his 18 holes, with the only two blemishes coming on back-to-back par 4s on the sixth and seventh.
He shot 4-under on the back nine, thanks to birdies on four of his first six holes after the turn, which vaulted him into the lead. The 110th Alabama State Amateur Championship will be held June 9-13 at The Country Club of Birmingham – West.
Yerger shot 1-under and tied for fourth in his qualifying event at Eagle Pointe Golf Club in Houston, Texas, on Sunday. The rising junior made the turn even after a birdie and a bogey on the front, but almost immediately went in the red with a birdie on the par-3 11th and closed with seven pars.
The 117th Texas Amateur is set for June 18-21 at Spanish Oaks Golf Club in Bee Cave, Texas.
Poppell also won his qualifier, shooting a 67 at Capital City Country Club in Tallahassee, Fla. He was one of just two golfers to qualify from that site for the 109th Florida Amateur Championship, held June 11-14 at The Dye Preserve & The Club at Admiral's Cove in Jupiter, Fla.
Earlier this month, Poppell advanced to the final round of qualifying for the U.S. Open Championship after tying for second at a local qualifier.
