Men’s Tennis Beats Louisiana, Advances to Semifinals

TROY, Ala. – The Troy men's tennis team was all business on Friday morning, as it defeated No. 5 Louisiana 4-3 in the quarterfinals of the Sun Belt Tournament. With the victory, Troy will play top-seeded Old Dominion in the semifinals on Saturday morning.
Troy (20-7) started fast during doubles play, which carried over to the singles portion of the match. Louisiana (10-12) battled tough but couldn't overcome the early deficit put in place by the Trojans.
The all-conference duo of Nicolas Simkin and Noah Martens kicked things off with a 6-2 win in the No. 1 doubles spot to move to 8-5 this season and win their fourth match in a row. The Trojans clinched the doubles point to take the 1-0 lead thanks to a 6-1 victory by Henrique de Brito and Luciano Alcocer at No. 3.
This season, the Trojans are 16-1 when taking a 1-0 in the early stages of the match.
Simkin extended the Troy lead to 2-0 with an impressive 6-3, 6-4 victory at the No. 2 spot. The redshirt senior is 9-10 in singles and has won his last four matches. His doubles partner, Martens, also made quick work of his singles match, winning 6-1, 6-1 to move the Trojans lead to 3-0. The win marked his 13th of the season.
Louisiana wasn't going down without a fight, as the Ragin' Cajuns won the next two courts to make it a 3-2 Troy advantage. The remaining two matches each went to a third set as the pressure was mounting for Troy to close things out.
The Ragin' Cajuns picked up a win at No. 5 to even things up at 3-3. The match came down to Luciano Alcocer at No. 6, and he came through with a gritty, 7-6 (9-7), 4-6, 6-4 to clinch the match for the Trojans. It was Alcocer's 16th win of the season and the most important one yet.
