NEW ORLEANS, La. – Five Troy men's tennis student-athletes have earned All-Sun Belt honors, the conference announced Wednesday.
Yeray Andres Pastor and Ausias Martin Melo were named to the All-Sun Belt Singles Second Team.
Troy's lone senior this season, Andres Pastor went 15-7 in dual play this spring, including a 12-2 mark on Court 3. The Spainiard put together an 11-match win streak from March 7 to April 14. His win on Court 3 in the Sun Belt semifinals against Georgia Southern helped send Troy to its first championship match appearance since 2015.
"Yeray was our leader and captain this season," head coach Rolando Vargas said. "In very important matches, he showed a lot of poise and experience. With that leadership, he was able to push his teammates around him. He finished his career playing for a title. The improvement and commitment that he showed certainly paid off."
Martin Melo impressed in his first season with Troy, finishing the year with a 15-7 record in dual play. He played a majority of his matches on Court 1, where he went 13-5. From March 19 to April 14, the Spaniard won nine matches in a row, including wins over Mercer and Southern Miss. His win on Court 1 in the Sun Belt semifinals against Georgia Southern helped send Troy to its first championship match appearance since 2015.
"Outstanding year for Ausias as a freshman to step up to Court 1," Vargas said. "His improvement was outstanding, and he played with a lot of heart. The results definitely showed given his impressive record."
Two doubles pairings landed on the all-conference teams, highlighted by Luciano Alcocer and Pastor's First Team selection. Despite pairing together just three times in the spring, the duo qualified for the ITA Sectional Championships in the fall following a run to the semifinals of the ITA Southern Regional.
"It was a tremendous year for this duo after having a record-breaking result in regionals," Vargas said. "Going all the way to the semifinals after beating the No. 1 seed, Auburn, along the way and earning a spot in sectionals. Just an amazing year for them."
The pair of Thiago Drozdowski and Stephan Tavares Noale earned a spot on the Doubles Second Team following a 13-3 spring record, including an 11-2 mark on Court 1. The duo won five of its last six matches (one unfinished), including a win on Court 1 in the Sun Belt Championship match over Old Dominion, helping Troy secure the doubles point.
"This was a brand-new pair that started in the spring on Court 1," Vargas said. "They've bonded really well and have a lot of energy. They've shown that they can play against anyone and helped us out a lot throughout the season. We were able to win the majority of doubles points, including three in the conference tournament, and we couldn't have done it without these two."
